According to the soldier-writer and native of Dursey, Philip O'Sullivan-Beare, writing in 1621, it was a 'monastery, built by Bonaventura, a Spanish Bishop, but dismantled by pirates'. Still surrounded by the old potato ridges called 'lazy beds'
